Alister Matheson Articles. Bay of Plenty Journal of History.

Alister Matheson (1926–2011) was a renowned Tauranga historian and a descendant of a pioneering family from Matua. He dedicated his life to researching local history, with a particular focus on Otumoetai and Maketu. Matheson was educated at Otumoetai Primary School and King’s College and was awarded the Tauranga Heritage Award in 1999 for his significant contributions to preserving the area’s history.

Matheson authored books on Motiti Island and the Wairere Track, the latter of which, detailing the old Maori and missionary route across the Kaimai Range, helped raise funds for the Elms Trust. Additionally, he wrote 41 articles for the Tauranga Historical Society’s journal, many of which explored the history of Maketu and the Maori heritage of the Western Bay of Plenty.
