Te Tumu Pa

Near the start of the easterly bend, the Papamoa Hills descend to the flatlands. About a mile to the east, Te Tumu Pa was located on the flat terrain, rather than a hill as is typical for Maori pas. It was fortified with palisades and ditches. Te Tumu Pa belonged to the Ngaiterangi tribe, allies of Waharoa. It was situated on the left bank of the Kaituna River, about two miles from Maketu. Here, the river flows from the interior to within a hundred yards of the sea, then makes a sharp turn eastward, running parallel to the coastline until it reaches Maketu.

  • The Kaituna River Fords and Ferry Service

    Story Excerpt:

    Travellers who used the ocean beach routes to and from Maketu, Bay of Plenty, in the early days necessarily had to cross either the Kaituna river ford on the north- western approaches to the settlement or the Waihi river ford on the south-eastern approaches. In their final stages the beach “roads”to Maketu lay along narrow sand-spits, with the sea on one side and the rivers and their estuaries on the other.
