Lower Kaituna River Diversions

This project commenced in June 2018 and was completed in February 2020. The Re-diversion was designed to maximize estuary flow and maintain Te Tumu open for flood protection and boating access.

March 2003 – Kaituna River, TE Tumu and Maketu

1981. First major division of the Lower Kaituna River under the scheme* at the Te Tumu where the loop in the foreground was blocked off. A new channel was excavated sweeping the river gently out to the coast (upper right). (Ford Collection)

Ford Cut, 1957. This photo shows the cut two years after it was opened in 1959. further man-made modifications to the river in 1983 created Ford Island. (Ford Collection)

Ford Twin Cuts, 1948. This photo was taken before the Te Tumu Cut was opened to the sea in 1957. The old Mill Manager's house at the Point was demolished when the 1957 cut was constructed. (Ford Collection)
